In addition to providing decent dormitory for 120 boys at Luesalemba, the completion of the two sixth form classroom block since 2010, provides a lot of opportunities to students to complete their sixth form in Temotu instead of searching for guardians in Honiara to facilitate their sixth form education. Since the completion of the sixth form more than 500 students went through the sixth form some of whom have made it to various universities of higher education. The figures below (table 1 and table 2) show that the province has so far made a total contribution of SBD501, 161 towards the construction of Education Ministry Headquarter in Lata. Of the total estimated cost of SBD1, 500, 000 of Education Headquarter, the TPG is expected to contribute about 40% of the cost with the objective of promoting education service delivery in Temotu. Providing the stadium wing for USP is facilitating access to higher education to people who would have otherwise found it impossible to enrol in those courses away from Lata.
The most important achievement of all is the efforts made by TPG in providing access to clean drinking water in the province. The Nembo Water Pump Building and the procurement of a brand-new generator is able to provide water to residents at Gracious Bay and Lata. This makes water supply more reliable than rain water, though the pumping of water from Nembo has now stopped as it has become a little bit expensive for the province because of the cost of fuel. Efforts are being made to team up with other development partners to ensure continuous pumping of water from Nembo.
What is more important and fascinating here is the ability of the province to plan, procure and deliver such solid projects that facilitate service delivering in the province. This has been made possible because of the efforts of the MPGIS in ensuring continuous capacity building through its Provincial Governance Strengthening Programme (PGSP), which is now fully funded by the Solomon Islands Government. You may recall that EU, RAMSI, UNDP and UNCDF were the donors who provided support to SIG for the whole of PGSP phase I. Before 2008, it would have been impossible to imagine that TPG deliver such complex projects considering all the capacity and funding issues that nearly made all provinces dysfunctional. The persistence efforts of MPGIS seems to be paying off.
